Vasectomy Reversal Surgery - Changing Your Mind Regarding Children Just Isn't That Unusual
By Erina Array
There are approximately one half million vasectomies in the U.S. every year. But out of that number, roughly twenty five thousand want to have a vasectomy reversal at some time. This is on top of the men who had the surgery in the past and have now changed their minds.
A vasectomy is performed by cutting the tubes that carry sperm from the testicles. By performing this procedure it blocks the movement of sperm and, thus prevents pregnancy. The reversal undoes the original doctor's handiwork and reconnects the tubing to help facilitate conception and therefore the sperm can once again move from the testicles.
When you elect to go in for this vasectomy reversal procedure the level of success will depend on many factors. First, and foremost is the experience, expertise and skill of the micro-surgeon who will be conducting the surgery. But other things come into play, as well. One, is the time it has been since the vasectomy was performed. Of course, the shorter the time frame the better the odds.
Other things to consider concern the person's age and his habits. If he is prone to wearing tight boxers this could be a factor for some men. Also, taking long, hot showers or using a hot tub frequently can cause the rate of success to diminish.
Another important consideration is the way the original procedure was performed. Sometime, a doctor will not only cut the vas deferens, but they will cut out a small section or even cauterize the ends to ensure that it takes and holds for life. Even though this is a wonderful security feature it does cause complications for the doctor who is trying to perform the vasectomy reversal.
This procedure is very simple and can be performed in the doctor's office within a couple of hours. It is done strictly on an outpatient basis and there is usually no need for anything more than a local anesthesia. There is a waiting period after a vasectomy reversal before normal activity can resume, but with this being fairly low-cost and carrying a good degree of success it is the most logical alternative to make for the man who has changed his mind and now wishes to be a parent or a parent again.
